1630 - 5 May 1682

Father: Francis MENDENHALL

Notes

THOMAS MENDENHALL(#331) The Mendenhalls came from the County of Wiltshire, England, where the projenitors of the American branches apparently lived in or near Marriage Hill, near the borough of Mildenhall which was the earlier name of the family. The early families in America had become members of the Quaker faith, and many of their records are found in the Minutes of many of the Pennsylvania Meetings. Records are also found in the Reading and Marboro Meeting records in England. The name is also spelled Mynold, Minall and Mildenhall in these records. The earliest known ancestor is Thomas Mendenhall(Minold) who left a will dated 6-30-1682 which was probated at Sommerset House, London, in November 1682, and names the following children: eldest son Thomas Mindenhall, yeoman, sons John, Benjamin, Stephen and Moses, and daughter Mary, daughter Margery wife of Thomas Martin, and daughter Joan wife of John Spiers. He appoints his brother Benjamin Stroads and son Thomas Mildenhall, overseers. Executor wife Joan. Since his son Aaron was not mentioned, he probably already was deceased. The son Thomas was buried March 26,1739 and his wife, Mary, June 6, 1732. The son Stephen was buried December 4, 1732, unmarried leaving a will that was probated in London in 1732. Thomas Mendenhall may have been a son of Francis Mildenhall of near Mildenhall. Francis was buried November 7, 1673 at Little Beduin, County Wilts, and had two known children, Thomas and Jane. The "brother" Benjamin Stroads mentioned in Thomas Mendenhall's will indicates connection whith the Strode or Stroade family. Benjamin Strode could be a brother of Joan, Wife of Thomas Mendenhall. The Strode lineage goes back to Sir John de Strode, Knight, the 8th generation from Sir Warinus de la Strode, Lord of Strode, in Dorsetshire in the 17th year of the reigh of Henry III. This line descends to William Strode of Shepton Mallet who married Joanne Barnard who had six sons and three daughters. One of the daughters was Joanna, but none of the sons was named Benjamin. The name of Joanna's husband is not given and it has been suggested that she is Joan, wife of Thomas Mendenhall --Mendenhalls by Beeson 929.2 M522016 --Other Fields History: 30 AUG 1682 Somerset House, London, England
