For instance, a child of the last generation above: Line 63: Maud de CLARE, "whose maritagium was the manor of Buckingham, co. Bucks." Married William de BRAIOSE, murdered 1210 at Corfe or Windsor Castle, son and heir of William de BRAIOSE who d. 1211, of Bramber, Sussex and Totnes, Devon, by wife Maud de ST VALERY. Line 177 proceeds as follows: 1. Gruffyd ap LLYWELYN = Edith 2. Nest of North Wales = Osbern Fitz RICHARD 3. Nesta = Bernard de NEUFMARCHE 4. Sibyl de NEUFMARCHE = Miles Fitz WALTER de GLOUCESTER 5. Bertha = ca. 1150 William de BRAIOSE, of Brecknock, Abergavenney and Gowr, 1st Baron of Gwentland, son of Philip de BRAIOSE of Bramber, Sussex, and Aenor, dau. and heir of Johel (Judheal) de TOTENEIS, liv. 1123, of Totnes and Barnstable, co. Devon. 6. William de BRAIOSE, 5th baron de Braiose, d. Corbeil, 9 Aug 1211; = Maud de ST VALERY, d. 1210, murdered by King John who had her walled up alive in her castle walls with her young son, William 7. Reginald de BRAIOSE, d. 1227/8, = Grace de BRIWERE, d. before 1215, dau. of William de BRIWERE and Beatrice de VAUX. Line 177A shows a daughter: 7. Margery/Margaret de BRAIOSE, d. 19 Nov 1200; = Walter de LACY, b. ca. 1172, d. 1241, lord of Meath, Ireland and of Weobley, co. Hereford, son of Hugh de LACY by Rohese de MONMOUTH. So from this, it looks like the last generation you show, William de BRAIOSE & Maud de ST VALERY, had at least 3 kids: 1. William (who was walled up with his mother) 2. Reginald 3. Margery Line 194 adds to the previous generation: 5. Bertha = William de BRAIOSE 6. Sibyl de BRAIOSE, prob. living ca. 5 Feb 1227/8; = William de FERRERS, 3rd Earl of Derby, d. at Acre 1190 on a crusade. Line 222 mentions another dau. of Bertha of Hereford and William de BRAIOSE ("d. ca. 1192-3, of Bramber, Sussex") named Bertha, who married William I de BEAUCHAMP. So from this, it looks like William de BRAIOSE and Bertha had at least these kids: 1. William = Maud de ST VALERY 2. Sibyl = William de FERRERS 3. Bertha = William I de BEAUCHAMP Of course, there may be more than this book shows. Hope this helps. -- Pat(ricia) Boren pboren@rand.org ----------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- Subject: Re: De Broase (info?) Follow-ups to Gayle, please: gayle@spider.lloyd.com Hi there! I'm responding to your query concerning Braose. I do have quite a bit more, but here are the bare bones; if you want to flesh it out a bit, let me know. I do have quite a bit more. Lots of interesting tidbits. IE: You mention that Maud was murdered. Yes, this is true. Her 12 year old son was with her. (William, betrothed in 1297 to Maud De Clare) She and William had gone to John Lackland (King England) to beg his mercy on behalf of her husband. Being the sweet guy that he was, John had them both locked in the tower of Corfe (some say Windsor) Castle with naught but a crust of bread. When they found their bodies, young William was missing several fingers and a chunk of his cheek (or so the story goes), for he must have died first, leaving his mother to make a vallient effort to stay alive. I do have some more dates on the siblings and a few more odds and ends, but it's hard to get into a chart like this. I have extensive information on the Bramptons. Now, as I'm sure you know...everything must be looked into. I have not verified everything here. I have a theory concerning my approach to genealogy. I gather all information people are willing to give me or that can be found in books, etc., and then, when I start extensive work on that line I cross-reference and try to make some sense out of why I was given a great-grandpa 50 years younger than his great grandson, and so on. So you'll have to weed through and see what you come up with. You might try THE FAMILY OF BRAOSE by Dudley George Cary Elwes, or any of the Doomsday books, for he was with William in 1066. These are some of the books that I've made a note to try when I get back to Braoses: ANTIQUITIES OF HEREFORD, by John Duncumb ROYAL COM. ON THE ANCIENT AND HISTORICAL MONUMENTS AND CONSTRUCTIONS OF ENGLAND, by William Clewes THE CHURCH BELLS OF HEREFORD, by Frederick Sharp May your roses always bloom in the Son... -gayle Gayle Wilson gayle@spider.lloyd.com (916)621-1187-fax -- Pat(ricia) Boren pboren@rand.org ----------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------
