This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Sue Ashby canova@tstar.net ================================================================= === Will of Jessie Hinshaw, Made 22 Feb., 1784, Proved May Court, 1797 Chatham Co, NC, Rec. of Estates, 1782-1799 Vol. 2, pg. 127 NC State Archives film # C.022.50001 [Jessie Hinshaw is Quaker- the words "In the Name of God" at the beginning of the will have been marked out, nor does he use the name of the month] I Jessie Hinshaw of the County of Chatham & province of North Carolina being infirm in body but of sound Memory & knowing that it is appointed once for all men to die do this 22nd day of the second month and the year 1784 make and ordain this my last Will & Testament, In manner following, that is to say I do will and give to my Eldest son John Hinshaw twenty shillings and to my son Joseph Hinshaw twenty shillings to my Daughter Ruth Moon Twenty shillings to my Daughter Abigail Weisner twenty shillings to my Grand Daughter Hannah Hinshaw Twenty shillings I do give and bequeath to my Loving wife Abigail Hinshaw all the Remainder & residue of my goods chattles and moveables for her own use and property that is now in the premises as long as she lives my widow, But if she marries it is my will that she has a Horse Creature & her side saddle & a feather Bed & furniture and after her deces'd I give to my son Jessie Hinshaw the plantation & tools thereunto belonging with the loom & Tackling? I do also make & ordain my Loving Wife Abigail Hinshaw my Executrix & my friend John Marshall sole executer of this my Will Contain'd In Witness whereof I the said Jessie Hinshaw hath to this my last Will and Testament set my Hand & Seal this day & year above Written. Sign'd seal'd & Deliver'd by the Sign'd said Jessie Hinshaw as and for his last Will and Testament in the precence of us who where prescent at the signing sealing thereof Jacob Moon (X) Ruth Moon Benjamin Marhsall Jessie Hinshaw {Seal} Proved at May Term 1797 by the Oath of Jacob Moon a subscribing witness thereto Whereupon the Execut'x & Excut'r was qualify'd.

North Carolina the 8th Day of the 8th Month in the year of our Lord 1784 friend Tomas Greer this is to inform thee I and my wife is well and my Children is well also my son John is not maride yet But my sister Alice keeps house for Ezra and Thomas is married to two daughters of William Marshills. William is married to a daughter of William Hunts which have Visited your Parts sarah is not yet maried But liveth at home Brother Jesse is much afflicted with the Rhumatism Pains Brother Absolem and his family is well Moses Hammon and his family is well we have had very Pearlous times and lost much But through Devine Providance is Blessed with sufficient of the Nessarys of Life father in law and familey is well Except mother in law has been sorley visited with sickness for about a year But is now in a likely way of recovery uncle William Hinshaw and familey is well Except Thomas which has the gravel friend Thomas Geer Let William Delap or his heirs know that William Hinshaw and mary his wife and son Thomas is yet alive which being the very Lives of the lease Readford which I certify william Hinshaw. John Marshill and familey is well. William Marshill and familey is well and Like the country very well for it is full as good as we heard of. This year there is small flying Bugs in great numbers which have destroyed a great deal of wheat and is in a likely way of spoiling some corn. I have often wrote but have Received no answer father and mother with friends and neighbors are Either Dead or forgoten us or els I would expect some of them would have wrote Be pleased to let father and Mother see this letter if living likewise Brother John Cortney and all enquiring friends and neighbours I expect that thee will also be so kind as to write to me and to let me know how it is with thee and thy familey and with father and mother and with the three young men that lived with thee when I came away and how it is with thy brother James and familey Likewise with all friends blonging to grange meeting and old Neighbours of killy Nail I live so I can ride to the furthest of four monthly meetings in a Morning against Meeting time Heaving no more at presen to add I remain thy affectionet friend and Brother in the truth and Any More thou may be informed by my well asteemed Friend Zechoria Dix William Hinshaw tha lived in killey Nail formerly Archive: Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, Belfast, Northern Ireland Reference: D/1044/697 Courtesy of Irish emmigration researcher Evelyn Cardwell

Jesse and Abigail emigrated to North Carolina in 1768.1 An entry in the Grange MM minutes records on 2-5-1768 shows:41 "William Henshaw signified to this meeting that he and his brother Jess, with their families intend to remove from this to America and desire our certificate. Thomas Dawson and Jas Pillar are desired to make the needful enquiry concerning them and return acct. how thay find things to next preparative meeting which is appointed to be held the 26th of 2nd mo." On 2-26-1768, a similar entry in the minutes for Jesse's cousin Absolem was recorded:41 "Absolem Hinshaw acquainted this meeting that he intends removing with his wife and family to America and desires our certificate of removal, and this meeting being informed that Alice Hinshaw also intends removing to America and desires our certificate, this meeting therefore desires Thomas Dawson and Jas Pillar together with Jas Morton and Jonas Shaw to make enquiries concerning the above mentioned Friends and bring the same to the next meeting for approbation." An entry on 3-11-1768 shows:41 "Certificates being drawn for Jess Hinshaw, Absolem Hinshaw and William Hinshaw with their families, also for Alice Hinshaw, the same was signed in this meeting. Jonah Shaw is desired to record copies of said certificates and deliver the originals to said Friends." The Grange Monthly Meeting has a later entry showing:10 "It Appears that Jesse Hindshaw, Absolem Hindshaw & Willm Hindshaw with their respective families and also Alice Hindshaw removed to America in the year 1768". Jesse, Abigail, and 2 small children were received at the Cane Creek Meeting (N.C.) on 2-4-1769 on a certificate from Six Weeks Meeting, Grange, Ireland dated 3-20-1768.2,10,28

Notes

According to the Marriage Book of Ulster Quarterly Meeting, Jesse was from Dunsdead, Parish of Clanfeakill, County Tyrone, and Abigail was from Grange, County Tyrone.10 Jesse was from Dundead, parish of Clonfeacle, County Tyrone, and Abigail was from Grange, parish of Clonfeacle, County Tyrone. Their marriage certificate was witnessed by John Hinshaw.
